The majority of the 35,000,000 military and civilian casualties inflicted
during World War One were the result of artillery fire.
Many soldiers said no one could capture the sound of a
massive artillery bombardment.
The German poet August Stramm, in his poem, Shells, tried:
Deafness deafens terror wounds
Banging tapping churning screeching…
Stramm was killed in hand-to-hand combat on September 1, 1915.
